Big Grams is a collaboration between Greenwich, New York indie electronic duo Phantogram (Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter) and rapper Big Boi (Antwan Patton) of Atlanta-based hip-hop duo OutKast, in which the artists allow themselves to venture out of their respective comfort zones and experiment with ideas they wouldn’t have explored with their own projects.
The dreamy bridge isn’t foreseeable and feels like a powerful light shining through darkness. Something that is apparent early on is how good Barthel’s vocals are. They have a tender moodiness to them, similar to Portishead’s Beth Gibbons and some of the glam of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, which makes for a very good mixture and suits the music well. Carter’s vocals make their first album appearance on ‘Never Coming Home’, arriving on top of gentle and brooding guitars.
His voice feels more psychedelic on the colourful chorus as he croons, ‘If this is love, I’m never going home’. The album is full of songs like this with contrasting ideas working together in a great way. Another example of this is ‘I Don’t Blame You’ which features skipping horn samples, before a tough drum track comes in accompanied by peaceful synths.
Closer ‘My Only Friend’ is intense. The song is isolated for the first part, then the fast-pace comes out of nowhere and unexpectedly takes it into a new place. Throughout, Barthel sings of a relationship ending and fierce lines like, ‘Believe the lies that people tell you, you’ve lost your battle’ are effective whether the song is in a quiet moment or a more forceful one.

Their second album, ‘s Voices , shows how far they have come and, despite some minor flaws, ends up being a really solid and deep modern pop album that sounds perfectly crafted and infused with real emotions. It’s easy to see why their music has blown up over the time between albums: Their use of samples is deft as they dig deep into the work of South Korean psychedelic guitarist Shin Joong Hyun , the Chi-Lites with excellent use of “Coldest Day of My Life” on the beautiful ballad “Bill Murray” , and rare soul grooves that provide some off-kilter mystery and grit to their dreamy approach.
Rising out of the background like a massive wave of warmth and giving the album an emotional center are Barthel ‘s impressive vocals. She can belt it out like she’s trying to reach the back rows of an arena like on the rumbling new wave-inspired “Nothing But Trouble” and the Rihanna -produced-by- Tricky jammer “Fall in Love” or she can slink around in the mix with some real subtlety on the murky, moody “Black Out Days” , but no matter the size or mood, she totally nails every song.
On the other hand, the handful of songs Josh Carter sings are somewhat disappointing.

Sarah backed up against the closed door, her eyes wide, watching him. She closed her eyes, steeling herself, then her eyes snapped open as his lips touched hers gently.
She frowned slightly, and Josh saw renewed hope in her eyes. She looked at his fingers as he put his hand lightly on her shoulder, and he put his other hand under her chin. He bent to kiss her again, and for a moment she struggled, pressing her lips together. Josh pushed the tip of his tongue between them, and she yielded reluctantly, their kiss deepening.
He moved back again, and she caught her breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly. Sarah didn’t reply, and Josh pursed his lips. She turned slowly, looking over her shoulder, and her body stiffened again as he moved closer, resting his hands on her shoulders. He deftly undid the buttons of her dress, then slid it off her shoulders.
She caught the fabric against her breasts with her hands, and he chuckled.
