My contact information is given on a separate page. I first became interested in workhouses while researching my family history. I discovered that my great-great-grandfather had died in a workhouse and that his death had been registered by the matron. I also became fascinated by the buildings after seeing an old Victorian Ordnance Survey map of the town where I then lived. At the edge of town was a huge hexagonal shape which dwarfed everything in the area.

Eager to discover more, I visited the local libraries but found that they had precious little information about the large and fearsome building which had stood there for the best part of a century. This web site, which began life at the start of , is the result of my researches and visits to hundreds of former workhouse sites across the British Isles, from Truro to Thurso, and from Dover to Donegal. At the last count, it contained over web pages, photos and illustrations, and maps and plans.

Places in Hemel Hempstead: The Church has a handsome tower, containing a good ring of bells, and surmounted by a lofty spire terminating in a vane; it stands upon the west side of the town, in an extensive church-yard; and from the style of its architecture seems to have been originally erected shortly after the Norman Conquest: Its form is that of a cross, from the intersection of which the tower rises: The nave is connected with the aisles, by semicircular arches, the mouldings of which are plain, zigzag, and billeted; the pillars upon which they rest are in the true Norman style of architecture, massive and with square capitals.

The entrance at the west end is not at present used; it presents us with a richly-ornamented recessed arch, springing, at each side, from two columns and two half columns; the mouldings are richly sculptured, and the capitals all dissimilar. The tower rests upon semicircular arches, springing from large clustered pillars, with square capitals, the sculpture of each of which is different.

Ceramic finishes were not only cool attractive and durable but also hygienic and easy to clean.

They were an obvious choice for the walls and displays of butchers and fishmongers.
